U.S. TRAVEL SPENDING ON PAR WITH PRE-PANDEMIC FIGURES: Direct spending on travel in the U.S. in 2022 stood at $1.2 trillion and was on par with pre-pandemic figures, revealed latest data by the U.S. Travel Association (USTA). This produced an economic footprint of $2.6 trillion. Robust demand for domestic leisure travel ensured a strong travel rebound in 2022, USTA said. Through 2022, travel supported roughly 15 million American workers, with 8 million directly employed by the travel industry. Travel spending generated nearly $160 billion in tax revenue, including $84 billion in state and local tax revenue in 2022. Travel-generated tax revenue alleviated an average of $1,270 in taxes per U.S. household. However, USTA economists said overall travel spending was down 14% in 2022 when adjusted for inflation.
