Actor Dilip Joshi, who began his Bollywood career with Sooraj Barjatya’s romantic drama Maine Pyaar Kiya starring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree in the lead roles, once co-owned a travel agency. But the artist in him was not satisfied with the monotonous nature of this job and he decided to leave it to try his luck in acting, which he knew was a “very insecure line”.
Joshi, during his appearance on Bombay Journey, said, “There was a phase in my life when I was a partner in a travel agency. From 1985 till 1990, it was a routine life: go to the office at 9 am and come back at 9 pm. We used to manage the luxury buses which ran between Mumbai and Ahmedabad and Mumbai and Bhavnagar.”
But, one day he realised that it was not his ‘cup of tea’, and sat down for a conversation with his wife. He shared that he wanted to be an actor and she supported him. “She told me ‘we do not wish to be crorepatis (millionaires), and we have enough to get ourselves food’,” shared Joshi.
After telling his wife, Joshi told his father about his idea and got his support as well. “He has always been supportive. He told me, ‘Jo tere mann kare, vo kar (Do what your heart says),” Dilip Joshi shared.
The actor’s gamble paid off, and today he has a successful acting career. He is currently seen playing Jethalal on Sony SAB’s hit sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmahwhich is currently in soup.
Joshi had a knack for acting from an early age. He started doing stage plays in school but that also hampered his studies. He revealed, “I had opted for the science stream. But at the same time, I was doing many plays. I got many awards for the plays I did in my school in 12th standard. But because of that my studies got sidelined and I failed in 12th. ‘Life mein pehli baar failure hua main, kaafi bura laga’‘ (I failed for the first time in my life, and it felt quite bad). Then I changed my stream to commerce.”
