A TWO-DAY international conference, Advantage Healthcare India, is being held from Wednesday, on the sidelines of the G20 meetings, to focus on “medical value travel” – of patients, for affordable and timely health interventions, and healthcare workers, for a more robust system across the world.
Officials from 10 countries and business delegations from at least 70 countries are expected to attend the conference.
“Say there is a cancer patient in Bangladesh but the surgery needed is not available in the country, should they not be able to get it? Or, suppose there is a country where the waiting time for a particular procedure is three months, should they keep waiting and let their condition deteriorate?
Or, say Nigeria has a new hospital but no trained staff, can our doctors and nurses not go there to offer services and training? Mobility of patients and healthcare workers will ensure universal health coverage in the true sense,” said a senior official from the Union Health Ministry.
With the government promoting India as a hub for medical tourism, the initial focus would be on private sector facilities, said senior Health Ministry officials.
PM Narendra Modi will address the event virtually on Wednesday, while the health minister will hold bilateral meetings.
