The Lake Effect Chapter of the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association announced it will host Food and Energy Workshops on April 30 at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Painesville Township.
Starting at noon, prior to the workshops, participants can enjoy an organic vegan wrap along with organic cookies and an organic beverage while supplies last.
Then, from 12:20 to 12:40 p.m., the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association will show that “Organic” is all around and how it is important for a person’s health and the planet.
From 12:40 to 1:30 p.m., there will be a “Homesteading 101” program presented by John from Red Beet Row in Jefferson.
There will be tips, tools, and references for starting a permaculture-inspired homestead. The program will cover orchards, gardens, livestock, earthworks and more. It will detail where to put things on one’s land, how to start building one’s dreams with references based on Northeast Ohio resources.
From 1:40 to 2:30 p.m., the program will be “Solar Energy Applications for Home, Farm and Business” presented by Tom and Valerie from A’s and O’s Farm in Mentor.
The presentation will be on the prevailing need and potential for becoming energy independent using solar panels and electric vehicles. Hands-on instruction using solar panel kits will help attendees learn enough to make their own simple solar devices, plus get the knowledge to consider and intelligently discuss a full home scale or business renewable energy system.
Lastly, from 2:40 to 3:30 p.m., Steve from Bat Barn Farm in Chardon will present “Fermentation and the Preservation of Local Food.”
Fermentation is an age-old food preservation technique that transforms ingredients into something new. Attendees will learn the simple steps that can turn cabbage into sauerkraut or kimchi and hot peppers into chili sauce.
Food and jars will be provided. Space is limited and a $10 registration is required. Registration closes on April 27.
