G-7 science heads call for action to remove space debris from orbit

SENDAI, Japan (Kyodo) — Science ministers from the Group of Seven industrialized nations called Saturday for concerted efforts to remove space debris orbiting the Earth.

During their two-day talks in Sendai, the ministers also agreed that advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing are vital to the green transition as well as economic and national security.

The science and technology representatives of the G-7 — Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, plus the European Union — gathered with the goal of ensuring the benefits of scientific research are shared globally while protecting the national and economic security of each country.

The ministers condemned Russia for its ongoing invasion of Ukraine, saying in their communique that it threatens the international order based on the rule of law.

“We also acknowledge that science, technology, and innovation will play a key role in rebuilding Ukraine as a modern and sustainable economy,” the statement said.
