Georgian FM, UN delegates discuss country’s foreign policy goals, reforms

Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Monday discussed his Government’s foreign policy priorities, domestic reforms and the country’s cooperation with the United Nations and other international organisations with visiting permanent representatives of the UN.

The Georgian foreign office said the meeting was hosted as the diplomats of UN states started their visit to Georgia, with meetings with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on the agenda of their five-day trip.

They will also have discussions with representatives of the country’s legislative and executive authorities to review governance-related reforms and the country’s “important economic steps”, the body added.

The visit will also involve the UN delegation’s visit to central Georgia’s Tserovani settlement for the citizens internally displaced from the Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region during and after the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia.

They will also visit the village of Odzisi, also in central Georgia, where illegal barriers installed by occupation forces separate the region from the rest of Georgia.

A meeting with representatives of the regional Government of the western autonomous Adjara region in the Black Sea city of Batumi is also scheduled before UN representatives depart on Friday.
