‘Holding elections on time among top priorities’

KARACHI:

Sindh Chief Minister-designate, Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar, said that the primary duty of a caretaker government is to ensure elections timely and in transparent manner.

He expressed his commitment to providing better facilities for the marginalised sections of society.

While acknowledging the challenges within the bureaucracy, he aims to instill a sense of public service among its members.

Baqar, a former judge of the Supreme Court, became the interim Sindh chief minister yesterday after Governor Kamran Tessori signed a summary for his appointment.

He plans to utilise the existing system to serve the public and execute his responsibilities diligently.

“Our focus will be on initiatives that benefit the people of the province,” he stated while highlighting the urgent need to address Karachi’s issues, Baqar said during an interview with The Express Tribune.

He assured that the responsibilities of the government will be managed efficiently during his tenure.

Following his swearing-in ceremony, discussions about the caretaker cabinet’s composition will commence.

He emphasised that he will strive to improve conditions for the underprivileged while acknowledging that the bureaucracy might not be entirely revamped.

He aims to integrate a culture of public service into the existing system to facilitate smooth governance.

Speaking about elections, he asserted that they should be conducted as per schedule, under the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

He pledged full cooperation with the ECP within legal parameters to ensure peaceful and transparent elections.
