RIYADH –

Iran announced the resumption of operations in a number of its diplomatic missions to Saudi Arabia in both Riyadh and Jeddah.

In a press briefing, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said the two countries are in the early stages of resuming relations and reopening embassies, noting that three Iranian diplomatic missions in Riyadh and Jeddah have already begun their operations.

He explained that this progress is a “first step” in the restoration of ties.

He added, “We are in the first stage of resuming the operations of the diplomatic missions of the two countries, and administrative procedures are being implemented quickly. We are optimistic to see the full resumption of the operations of the two countries’ representations within the specified time limit.”

Kanaani indicated that there is an Iranian team in Saudi Arabia to complete the administrative procedure to resume the full work of the Iranian missions, which was also coordinating the humanitarian efforts related to the evacuation of Iranian citizens from Sudan.

Kanaani thanked Saudi Arabia for its “valuable cooperation in evacuating Iranian nationals from Sudan” through the port city of Jeddah.

“The head of the Iranian mission travelled from Riyadh to Jeddah to carry out the administrative procedures through close contact with Saudi officials,” he said, explaining that the evacuations from Sudan “were not an easy task.”

On April 12, an Iranian delegation arrived in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, as part of a plan to reopen Tehran’s embassy and diplomatic missions in the kingdom, after a seven-year closure.

On March 10, Saudi Arabia and Iran announced the resumption of its diplomatic relations and the reopening of embassies within two months, following Chinese-sponsored talks in Beijing.
