The magnificent Keir, currently Britain’s most theatrical and singularly, unique pop artist, releases his most emotionally-charged single to date via Vertigo/Universal on August 11. 2023. Entitled Voices, the song showcases the delicate nuances of Keir’s extraordinary voice, a natural phenomenon, and a mellifluous, brittle instrument so finely poised and positioned to be able to claim land rights of its own. Of the song itself, Keir comments, “I have always found an affinity to emotions connected with the darkness of the mind. There is a background in my family, but it’s also an interest for me. The way the mind works. It’s power. And magic. I love to write about the mind often, and all its subversions of reality. I think Voices is like that. It moves between the corners of somebody’s mind. Someone who is taunted by the circus which it can sometimes be. And the circus for many of us is what we live with, it can define us and it can be a very interesting, dark world. It can be light and playful too but we must learn to live with both worlds of the mind and appreciate that one cannot exist without the other.”
Keir premiered Voices recently on his 45-minute ProSieben Music Special – a performance slot usually reserved for artists such as Arctic Monkeys and Metallica – which was aired at 11pm on 6th June.
Voices utilizes a common theme running through much of Ker’s material – mental health. For four years, Keir acted as a support worker at Dimensions in Bath, working with people who have autism and severe learning difficulties. For the record, he absolutely loved it, feeling “a deep connection to the people we supported and the darkness they felt.” Keir thinks this is because struggles with mental health run in his family. “A family member was sectioned when she was younger,” says Keir now, “and there’s something about dark inner turmoil I’ve always found an affinity with. My intentions are not to glamourise darkness, but to shine a light towards it. Music is my way of connecting the dots I suppose.”
Keir’s hugely-anticipated, self-titled debut album will be released on Vertigo/Universal on August 25th 2023. Keir will also be appearing live on the following dates:
