Local NAACP stands in unity with FL travel advisory

PEORIA (25News Now) – The NAACP has issued a travel advisory for Florida.

The organization warns that the state is “openly hostile” toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals.

The Peoria NAACP branch stands with the advisory.

The NAACP issued a formal travel advisory Saturdaysaying in part:

“Under the leadership of Governor Desantis, the state of Florida has become hostile to Black Americans and in direct conflict with the democratic ideals that our union was founded upon.”

The group says the travel advisory is in direct response to the Desantis Administration’s aggressive attempts to erase black history and to restrict diversity, equity and inclusion programs in Florida schools.

“It’s really a revelation of how far we haven’t come as a country. We thought we were much more ahead, but come to find out that we’re not,” said Peoria NAACP President Pastor Marvin Hightower.

Pastor Hightower hopes people stand up against the legislation in Florida and does not want to see similar legislation in Illinois.
