Elvis Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough had a daughter with husband Ben Smith-Petersen via surrogate mother.
The baby’s arrival was announced during a memorial service for the late Lisa Marie Presley in January. But just this week, the 34-year-old actress opened up to Vanity Fair, explaining that little Tupelo girl Storm Smith-Petersen was born via surrogacy due to Lyme disease.
‘I think it’s a very beautiful, selfless, incredible act that these women do to help other people. I am able to carry children but it seemed like the best choice for what I was physically experiencing with the autoimmune disease,’ explained Riley.
At the time he gave the interview, Riley was in Switzerland recovering from a bacterial infection.
‘I took advantage of this little break to come and see if I could ease the situation a bit. It’s a holistic treatment center and offers all kinds of things you can’t do in America yet, like blood cleansing.’
The girl’s name, Tupelo Storm, pays tribute to her grandfather Elvis, born in the city of Tupelo – the county seat of Lee county in the state of Mississippi -, and to Riley’s younger brother, Benjamin Storm, who died in July 2020, when he was only 27 years old.
‘It’s funny because we chose his name before the Elvis movie,’ commented Riley.
‘I thought, ‘That’s great because it’s not a very well known word or name in relation to my family.’ It’s not like Memphis or anything like that. this way and Tupelo that way.” I thought, “Oh, no.” But that’s okay.’
Riley met Australian stuntman, Ben Smith-Petersen, on the set of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and they got married in 2015.
