SCO foreign ministers’ meet begins in state

The two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Council of Foreign Ministers (SCO CFM) began in Goa on Thursday.

Among the notable arrivals on Thursday for the meeting were Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang who are also expected to hold bilateral talks for the meet.

Before his arrival, Bhutto, in an online video message, said he was headed to the state for the meeting, adding that, Pakistan was committed and was taking its membership to the SCO seriously.

Upon his arrival in the state at Dabolim airport, a smiling Bhutto said he hoped the meeting would be a successful one. Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang also arrived in the state later in the evening.

The delegations, led by foreign ministers of eight nations- Russia, India, China, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, will be meeting over the two days to hold bilateral talks.

Union Minister for External Affairs S. Jaishankar, who arrived on Wednesday, met and interacted with SCO Secretary General Zhang Ming on Thursday. “Started my meetings at SCO CFM with a productive interaction with Secretary General Zhang Ming. Appreciate his support for India’s SCO Presidency. Indian presidency is driven by a commitment to SECURE SCO. Its key focus areas are startups, traditional medicine, youth empowerment, Buddhist heritage and science & technology. Looking forward to a successful CFM in Goa,” tweeted the Union Minister earlier in the day.

In the afternoon, Jaishankar also held consultation meetings with the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov.

Meanwhile, across the route from the airport to the hotel in South Goa where the meeting is taking place, police personnel were on their toes directing traffic as and when the delegations and delegates were moving around.
